On his inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” New York City, declaring “a new era” and an audacious start to his term.

An Unprecedented Mayor

The young democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A opportunity of this kind comes rarely and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose hands are upon the levers of change,” Mamdani remarked.

Rejecting advice to be modest, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will lead with courage and vision.”

Adhering to Democratic Socialist Principles

The inauguration was a two-part event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over powerful interests.

An Ambitious Blueprint

Mamdani now faces one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a plan including:

• Subsidized daycare
• No-cost bus transit
• A rent freeze for approximately 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these programs may pose a hurdle to finance. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing External Dynamics

The new mayor will deal with concern from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a appointments director resigned over controversial past comments.

Mamdani has sought to address these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was described as unexpectedly cordial.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
